What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine developed by German Physician Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago. The medicinal system is based on the natural Law of Similars, first stated by Hippocrates, which is as follows: “That which has the power to make a healthy person sick also has the power to make a sick person healthy.” Hahnemann devoted his life to the development and refinement of this simple but profound healing modality. He outlined certain fixed Principles of Homoeopathy and a clear methodology used to select the appropriate remedy and to evaluate response to the remedy. We follow all of the principles and methodology put forth by Hahnemann. The principles are described briefly below.

  • Vital Force (known alternately as Life Force, Energy, Chi, Prana, Spirit, etc.)- the life energy that animates every living being. Homeopathic treatment seeks to stimulate and balance this energy in order to improve health.
  • Susceptibility- the power of the Vital Force to react and adapt to stimuli. The correct remedy increases the power to react and adapt and therefore decreases susceptibility to disease.
  • Miasms- inherited predispositions to certain disease processes and to certain traits and tendencies. Homoeopathic treatment reduces the negative influence of these predispositions.
  • Law of Similars- law of nature stating: ‘That which has the power to make a healthy person sick also has the power to make a sick person healthy.’
  • Provings- homoeopathic drug trails. In the classical provings, single remedies were given to healthy persons and the symptoms they developed were meticulously recorded to furnish a remedy symptom image totality. Using this data, the homoeopath selects remedy with the most similar symptom picture to that of the sick person in order to restore health and well being, in accordance with the Law of Similars.
  • Potentization- the unique process by which homeopathic remedies are made, involving carefully controlled serial dilution and succussion of the medicinal substance. This process renders the substance easily available to the Vital Force.
  • Minimum Dose- the homeopath gives the smallest possible amount of a remedy, just enough to stimulate the healing response of the Vital Force. Only one remedy is given at a time.
  • Direction of Cure- as healing proceeds, symptoms improve in a certain sequence: symptoms move from above downwards, symptoms move from more vital organs to less vital ones, symptoms move from the inside of the body towards its surface, and symptoms disappear in the reverse order of their appearance.
  • Totality- the whole picture of a person's symptoms and traits- physical, mental, and emotional. As a holistic system, homoeopathy always addresses this totality.
